The Neutral Spine
What this pose solves
The zero-pose of any shoot: aligns posture before any attitude appears.
Direction: what to tell the model
- 01Ask the model to face the camera with feet hip-width apart.
- 02Instruct them to push the crown of their head towards the ceiling, without raising the chin.
- 03Shoulders drop two fingers; shoulder blades slightly back.
- 04Arms hang loose, palms facing the thigh.
The 3x1 Matrix
Wide Shot
Full body
Full body centered, symmetrical negative space on both sides.
Medium Shot
Waist up
Waist up: clear reading of shoulders and elongated neck.
Close-up
Face / hands
Frontal face, key light on the nose axis, eyes on the lens.
Common Mistakes
- Chin rising with the spine — turning into arrogance.
- Arms too close to the torso, thickening the silhouette.
Variations
- Half step back with the rear foot to create a micro-diagonal.
- Hands clasped in front for a corporate version.
